Voice, a Verse of Prayer

Your voice and its melody,
the falsetto nursed in baritone,
is a mélange of the seasons,
the skies, dusk, and dawn.

The sound to which a Sufi
whirls — reaching Fitra.
The sound to which
his soul is in union with Ṣafā.

An embrace of the purity,
deific and divine,
your voice is the poetry
of the prayers they recite.

Sufism (“Tasawwuf” in Arabic), is a form of Islamic mysticism. It is an ascetic discipline that emphasises introspection to connect with God and find the truth of devotion. A ‘Sufi’ is one who practices Sufism. Sufi Whirling is a form of meditation – a dance of choreographed whirling movements through which a Sufi aims to reach Fitra – the source of all perfection. The whirling is performed to divine music that remembers God. Sufi Whirling is the way for Sufis to find Ṣafā, which means ‘purity’ in Arabic.

This poem talks about a voice, how it is a sweet richness — like a fusion of the seasons. The voice, it is the soulful sound to which a Sufi whirls and finds his purity. This voice is a divine sound, like the poetic verse of prayers they recite.
