Voice, A Verse of Prayer

Your voice and its melody,
the falsetto nursed in baritone,
is a mélange of the seasons,
the skies, dusk, and dawn.

The sound to which a Sufi
whirls — reaching Fitra.
The sound to which
his soul is in union with ṣafā.

An embrace of the purity,
deific and divine,
your voice is the poetry
of the prayers they recite.

Sufism‘ is often defined as ‘Islamic mysticism’, and is an ascetic discipline that focuses on selflessness, purity, and intense devotion to God. ‘Sufi Whirling’ is a form of physically-active meditation. The whirling is timed to divine music, and it is believed that these movements help a ‘Sufi‘ (one who practices Sufism) shed his ego and personal desires and focus on God. This will lead him to ‘Fitra‘, which is a state of purity and innocence (comparable to the Latin ‘Tabula Rasa’). ‘ṣafā‘ is the Arabic term for ‘purity’.

The voice, how it is a sweet richness — like a fusion of the seasons. The voice, it is the soulful sound to which a Sufi whirls and finds his purity. This voice is a divine sound, like the poetic verse of prayers the Sufis recite.
